Water Utility Scam Alert
Watch Out for Utility Agency Scammers
Reports of utility-related scams have increased in recent months, and Immokalee Water & Sewer District (the District) is urging customers to stay alert for individuals posing as utility employees. Please be aware that the District, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and other partner agencies will not enter a private residence to test water. When water testing is required, customers are instructed on how to collect samples and deliver them directly to the us.
Tips to Protect Yourself from Utility Scams
- Do not share personal or financial information with unknown callers. If you receive a call demanding immediate payment, pause and contact our Customer Service to verify the request.
- Payments are never collected in person at a residence or business. We will not request payment via gift cards, peer-to-peer payment apps (such as Venmo), water-related accessories, or water line insurance.
- Verify utility employees. Our staff wear clothing with the District logo, carry official identification, and operate clearly marked vehicles. If you are unsure, ask to see identification and contact Customer Service to confirm.
- We will not request entry into a home or business. Anyone claiming to be from a utility and asking for access should be turned away and reported to local law enforcement.
- Anyone who pressures you or refuses to wait while you contact the utility should be considered suspicious and reported immediately.
- Easement access: If your property contains a utility easement, we may access the easement area to reach water or sewer infrastructure such as mains, pump stations, or tanks.
