Before You Dig, Call 811

Image of home and utility lines

Before you start digging, remember that danger can be just below the surface – a network of utility lines ranging from less than an inch to several feet deep. They include internet, electric, water, sewer and natural gas lines. If you hit one of these lines, it can cause power outages, gas leaks, evacuations or injuries.

That’s why it is important—and the law—to contact 811 before you dig. Calling 811 notifies utility companies of a project so they can mark the approximate location of public underground lines they own and operate.

When to Use 811

All projects large and small require a call or contact 811 – even projects like:

  • Installing or replacing a fence
  • Installing or replacing a mailbox
  • Landscaping or irrigation work
  • Building a new deck, shed or garage
  • Installing a pool
  • Digging trenches for any reason
