Customers of the District will soon notice a small but important change when paying their water bills with cash.
Following the United States Mint’s decision to stop producing pennies in late 2025, many businesses and utilities across the country have begun adjusting how they handle cash transactions. Pennies had become increasingly impractical due to high production costs, declining purchasing power, and the widespread use of digital payments.
To align with this national shift and maintain efficient, accurate cash handling, the District will implement a new cash rounding policy effective June 1, 2026.
What This Means for Customers
- Cash payments only will be affected.
- When paying with cash, your total bill will be rounded up to the nearest five cents ($0.05).
- Any rounded difference is credited directly to your account, so you won’t lose money as a result of the change.
- Non-cash payments (credit/debit cards, online payments, checks, etc.) will not be affected.
Why This Change Is Happening
With pennies no longer being produced and becoming less common in circulation, handling exact cash payments has become more difficult and time-consuming. Like many utilities nationwide, the District is adopting a standard rounding approach to ensure transactions remain smooth, consistent, and transparent for customers.
Our Commitment to You
This update is designed to make in-person payments easier while ensuring fairness and accuracy. The District remains committed to providing clear communication and maintaining reliable service for all customers.
The new policy is part of Resolution 2026-05, which updates customer account procedures in response to these nationwide changes.
