MONITORING REQUIREMENTS NOT MET FOR THE IMMOKALEE WATER SYSTEM

We are required to monitor your drinking water for specific contaminants on a regular basis. Results of regular monitoring are an indicator of whether or not our drinking water meets health standards.

The District is required to sample for chlorinated herbicides every three (3) years. On July 26, 2023, the District sampled for Dalapon at the three (3) water treatment facilities and the results for all three samples were below the maximum contaminant level established by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. However, the samples showed detectable levels of Dalapon. On April 26, 2024, we became aware that our system recently failed to collect the correct number of drinking water samples for Dalapon. Although this incident was not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what happened and what we are doing to correct this situation.

During the fourth quarter of 2023 and first quarter of 2024 we did not monitor or test for Dalapon and therefore cannot be sure of the quality of your drinking water during that time as it relates to Dalapon.

Per 40 CFR 141 Subpart Q, Appendix B the health effects of Dalapon are “Some people who drink water containing Dalapon well in excess of the Maximum Contaminant Level over many years could experience minor kidney changes.”

Acute: EPA has found Dalapon to potentially cause the following health effects from acute exposures at levels above the Maximum Contaminant Level: no effects, but readily absorbed into and widely distributed throughout the body.

Drinking water levels which are considered "safe" for short-term exposures: For a 10-kg (22 lb.) child consuming 1 liter of water per day, up to a ten-day exposure to 3 mg/L or up to a 7-year exposure to

0.3 mg/L.

Chronic: Dalapon has the potential to cause the following health effects from long-term exposures at levels above the Maximum Contaminant Level: increased kidney-to-body weight.

Cancer: There is inadequate evidence to state whether or not Dalapon has the potential to cause cancer from lifetime exposure in drinking water.

What should I do?

There is nothing you need to do at this time. You may continue to drink the water. If a situation arises

where the water is no longer safe to drink, you will be notified within 24 hours.

What is being done?

The District is allowed to take one sample per year rather than one sample per quarter. In July 2023, we no longer qualified for reduced annual Dalapon monitoring. Beginning December 2023, we failed to begin monitoring quarterly for Dalapon.

We have taken the required samples for Dalapon, and the results were non-detect. We began monitoring quarterly for Dalapon on April 29, 2024, and will continue to monitor on this schedule until we qualify for reduced monitoring.
